I'm a lifelong painter based in Glasgow. Welcome to my first ever website for my work between2seas.art
My drawings and paintings hold my memories and experiences of 30 years living and working abroad, of visiting places throughout Europe and Brazil but many others too, of continuously engaging with new people of so many cultures and backgrounds or stages in life. Today, settled back in my home country of Scotland, all these sketches keep my memories alive, even after I have sold the final works. They are records of those immersive moments stored away in the background of my mind, conjuring up the moods and atmospheres and the characters I have met along the way. And they still arouse my curiosity to explore these experiences using new techniques and materials, whether rehearsing the same themes over and again, or exploring new contexts building on all that has gone before.

Create your own Expressionist Travel Journal
Over three mornings on 12, 13 & 14 June 2023 out in the grounds of Refugio Lanzagallo in Sicily, this workshop is for other adventurers who want to intensify their travel experiences through creating their own personal Expressionist Travel Journal. This workshop refers to approaches of the Expressionist greats like Matisse and Picasso, Bomberg, Mondigliani and Giacometti, and so many more. A refreshing complement to your holiday snaps, this workshop will help you tap into your own personality and experience in the moment, to free you up from classical constraints or rules of drawing and painting. Introducing you to a few select materials and techniques that are easy to travel with, you will gain the confidence to get started on your own Expressionist Travel Journal from the very first morning. You will leave brimming with ideas and enthusiasm for this ever appealing form of self-exploration, for the sheer delight of it or as the basis for future creative projects.
From my Sketchbook to Final Work

A beach seen from the shade of shoreline trees has been a recurring theme in my work. The initial sketch was done out in the open using oil pastels on paper and conjures up the feeling of my visit to the beach while living in Brazil. The 2 larger paintings take a lot from the much earlier sketch, and further explore the theme of heat and the jungle trees of Brazil. These two pieces are done in mixed media and now hang on my bedroom wall: I did so enjoy the beach in Brazil!
Personal Experiences
People & portraits
Over a life time of sketchbooks and art classes while living in different countries and traveling to even more, capturing the character of people I encounter has always held my interest.
Vistas & Landscapes
From my sketchbooks over the years I can see the influence of my childhood influences as well as those of my adult years living and traveling in Europe, Asia and Latin America. From my childhood in Scotland and Australia, I notice the influences of the Scottish colourists and hints of the Aboriginal dreamtime stories and pictures.
Things & curios
In more abstract and illustrative drawings and paintings, I see parallels and influences with my love of working with textiles and wool in knitting and sewing projects.
