Latest work
I'm a lifelong painter based in Glasgow.
My drawings and paintings hold my memories and experiences of 30 years living and working abroad, of visiting places throughout Europe and Brazil but many others too, of continuously engaging with new people of so many cultures and backgrounds or stages in life. Today, settled back in my home country of Scotland, all these sketches keep my memories alive, even after I have sold the final works. They are records of those immersive moments stored away in the background of my mind, conjuring up the moods and atmospheres and the characters I have met along the way. And they still arouse my curiosity to explore these experiences practising techniques and materials and getting to grips with new ones, often rehearsing the same themes over and again, or exploring new contexts and experiences, building on all that has gone before. I work with all sorts of crafts too, enjoying the challenges of knitting and sewing as well as working with upcycling and ephemera, all skills that are core to human development and creativity and which bring their own enjoyment and rewards through continuous practice, not least the sense of achievement in working with the hands. In an age of artificial intelligence, these are skills and knowledge that will fall into obscurity if we leave the pleasure of our surroundings and our clothes and journaling to the inevitably generic creativity of ai. Going forward, my studio at between2seas.art will host meetups and workshops on these themes, aimed at adults wanting to share their crafting interests and participate in group projects as well as learn new skills. The space will also be available on occasion as a pop-up space for creatives wanting to show their own work in their own way.

Create your own Expressionist Travel Journal
During the commonwealth games here in Glasgow, 23 July to 2 August, starting at an independent art studio in an old-Glasgow building at 82 Mitchell Street at the heart of the city centre, these workshops are for fellow adventurers wanting to intensify their travel experiences through creating their own personal Expressionist Travel Journal, whether visitors or locals. Each 2 hour session refers to approaches used by the Scottish and European Expressionist greats. A refreshing complement to your holiday snaps, this workshop will help you tap into your own personality and experience in the moment, to free you up from classical constraints or rules of drawing and painting. Each session briefly introduces a few select materials and techniques that are easy to travel with, you will gain the confidence to get started on at least 3 sketches in your own Expressionist Travel Journal. You will leave brimming with ideas and enthusiasm for this ever appealing form of self-exploration, for the sheer delight of it or as the basis for future creative projects. Get a taster for other resources available in Glasgow that you can explore in museums, libraries and other resource centres.

A beach seen from the shade of shoreline trees has been a recurring theme in my work these last years. The initial sketch was done out in the open using oil pastels on paper and conjures up the feeling of my visit to the beach in Rio State while living in Brazil. The 2 larger paintings take a lot from the much earlier sketch, and further explore my experience of heat and the jungle trees of Brazil through my sketches, enduring impressions and memories that remain, all these years later, within easy reach of my imagination. These two pieces are done in mixed media and now hang on my bedroom wall: I did so enjoy the beach in Brazil!
Working with ink & monoprinting

These 2 monoprints using ink on paper, are inspired by summer in Glencoe and the Cairngorms, here in Scotland
